Gypsy Soul

Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.

Songs are as sad as the listener

So lately I have been told by many people that my music is all really sad and depressing. It made me reflect on the past and how throughout my life that has been a common comment in regards to my musical tastes. I admit that yes, objectively the lyrics and actual music may give off an aura of depression or sadness but that is not the case for me. My music makes me really happy. It makes me feel connected with other people and the universe. It helps me to feel that I am not alone. There is a sense of comfort that comes with my music. However constantly hearing from others how sad my music makes them caused me to feel that somehow I am wired wrong. Then I remembered this quote from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer that says, “Songs are as sad as the listener”. Which I think I may just quote the next time someone says my music depresses them.

These are so addictive, pretty sure there is crack in them.

I’d like to emphasize that when a reader finishes a great novel, he will immediately begin looking for another. If someone loves your book, it increases the chance that he or she will look at mine. So there is no competition between writers. Another writer’s success helps build a larger readership for all of us.

We can all help each other

The unreal is more powerful than the real. Because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on. If you can change the way people think. The way they see themselves. The way they see the world. You can change the way people live their lives. That’s the only lasting thing you can create.

I love him. Love this quote.

If it had been easy for Romeo to get to Juliet, nobody would have cared. Same goes for Cyrano and Don Quixote and Gatsby and their respective paramours. What captures the imagination is watching men throw themselves at a brick wall over and over again, and wondering if this is the time that they won’t be able to get back up.

We can only hope
And I’m losing just about everything
It’s been all of my regrets to live a lie and end upset
and I remember when peace was a pretty contender
