Songs are as sad as the listener
So lately I have been told by many people that my music is all really sad and depressing. It made me reflect on the past and how throughout my life that has been a common comment in regards to my musical tastes. I admit that yes, objectively the lyrics and actual music may give off an aura of depression or sadness but that is not the case for me. My music makes me really happy. It makes me feel connected with other people and the universe. It helps me to feel that I am not alone. There is a sense of comfort that comes with my music. However constantly hearing from others how sad my music makes them caused me to feel that somehow I am wired wrong. Then I remembered this quote from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer that says, “Songs are as sad as the listener”. Which I think I may just quote the next time someone says my music depresses them.
